Cutlery

Cutlery in today's world generally means items used for eating food, whereas used correctly it actually means knives or items with a cutting edge, made by a "Cutler". Spoons and forks are flatware, and we still have a large old sign in the factory garage that says "Walter Trickett and Co Ltd. Manufacturers of spoons, forks and cutlery". On this website we will use the word cutlery in its modern all-inclusive form.

The term cutlery first appeared in 1297 in a tax return and the year previously Sheffield was granted a weekly market where it is almost certain that knives, scythes etc which were made locally were sold there. However, there are many places to research cutlery and its history, but without doubt the most famous city in the world, associated with cutlery, is here, Sheffield, England. Travel to even the remotest parts of this planet and when you say you come from Sheffield the immediate response is "... Aah cutlery", often followed by the word steel.

The craftsmanship, skills and traditions developed over 800 years are without equal and those standards are still practised today, and combined with modern technology at Chimo Holdings. In fact part of the group "William Yates" was founded in 1750 and is one of the oldest surviving companies not only in Sheffield, but in the UK and Europe. It was owned and managed for 253 years (during which time we had 10 monarchs) by seven generations of the Yates family until it became part of Chimo Holdings.

Cutlery forms the foundations and core of this company and we pride ourselves on the highest standards and quality of the extensive range we manufacture from sterling silver and silver plate through cream handled knives to unmounted blades. Unlike other manufacturers none of our cutlery products are massproduced, they are all made to order, individually filed and polished by hand, they are quality controlled at each stage of production and finally handfinished to give that deep and long lasting lustre.

As a mark of our commitment to both quality and our workforce we are the only cutlery manufacturers who are members of both the "Guild of Mastercraftsmen" and holders of the "Investors in People" award.

On the left-hand side of this page you will see the different categories of cutlery products - by clicking on the yellow buttons you will be taken to the relevant page where you will find information about that particular range of items.

Of particular interest is our unique "Pattern Selector" button as this takes you to a display of the various patterns of cutlery that we produce. Not only does it show details of the patterns and some of the history behind the design but also shows the different materials e.g. sterling silver, silver plate etc in which it is manufactured. Just click the buttons where it says "Choose your pattern".

Finally, may we draw your attention to our excellent repair and re plating service known as CUTLERY HOSPITAL. This service draws on all those traditional skills, craftsmanship and experience of our staff to repair, refurbish and revitalise old and infirm cutlery.

"My knives arrived safely today and I just had to let you know how delighted I am with the work thats been done. Hard to believe that the handles are over a hundred years old, and with the new blades they really do look better than new. Grateful you pass my thanks to the people who did the work."
